Overall Conclusion

Now that all of us have finally finished our presentation, we are ready to conclude our project. It was sometimes hard to do interviews, to explain and analyze our topics on our blog and in our interviews. However we successfully created what we think is a very good blog and conducted many interesting and useful interviews. We have developed our skills with technology; for example we think we are now much better at using a video camera, at editing video clips, at producing an impressing power point presentation and at creating a blog. We learnt a lot of things not only about the themes of Pinocchio Project but also about English customs and culture living here for 3 weeks.
We would live to thank our teachers who helped us with the project, the people we interviewed and our classmate Vincenzo, who has made a wonderful documentary of our project in Oxford: without his technical expertise we would have been lost!
So thank you all for your attention and we hope you have enjoyed our project!

Let's sum up: lying, honesty and naivety

CONCLUSION
We fell we’ve learnt a lot of things about human psychology thanks to this project. We’ve come across many different personalities and have found that people can be quite sensitive when if comes to admitting whether or not they think they are liars, if they are honest and if they think they can be naïve.
We did run into many difficulties and we had to work very hard to finish every thing on time. As if that wasn’t enough the computer turned again us as well, being so slow that we had wait exhaustingly for each word we wrote. Fortunately Jacky come to the aid of us many times and so we thanks her sincerely. It was surprising to find out 40% of people do not think to be liars; how do interpret this? We daresay it’s our unconscious will of not thinking of it or of not recognizing it, that’s worst.
It’s rather strange 10% stated they’re not liars, and all of them answered to the next question “when do you lie? ”. If you’re not you shouldn’t answer. Still you disturbing id to discover 25% of young people don’t believe in friendship and would be able to injure a friend if necessary..
It’s also compelling to know that most people do feel guilty after lied; that’s appreciable but it mustn’t justify (unless you believe in the statement THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS). Well, concluding the speech, if people were so honest as they profess to be, life on the Earth would be just better for sure.. It’s not utopian but quite unreal, you know..

A crazy interview

Senior citizens

It is very important to explain the reason why we did chose this specific category and it is that we wanted to work out an out coming of their lives.

We are sorry we couldn't interview enough people belonging to this category, to make any graph or statistic. Because of this we are obliged to report merely the answers of the interview.

Liar=no Honest=yes Naive=no

No (But it's human!) May be you don't know me..

Yes, I've hidden many things to my parents, I must confess..

I prefer much more the way I'm now rather than before, because when one lies always runs the risk of being found out..

First of all is important to be honest towards ourselves because otherwise you cannot be honest toward other people. Lies aren't to be said

I think I've never done anything dishonest.. well... speeding by car..

Not at all. Dishonest people go to jail.

Of course they're not the same! Look at map on the dictionary!

And what about teachers?

TEACHERS

Talking about Honesty just a little part of teacher state to be honest to their pupils, because it's a part of their personality.. But almost 80% declare to be not able to be completely honest because of several causes: someone is afraid to be disappointed by others' behavior, one said that encourages his pupils pretending to be satisfied with their works also when he's not.
A graph about teachers' naivety is avoidable because everybody is to be considered absolutely naive towards his pupils.
Someone said that hopefully he is not, but he actually is. Someone else admitted it and that is bitterly sad to be continuously disappointed and angry at their pupils, after he trusts them.

In spite of being quite sorry of the results and of the unreliability of their students, very seldom teachers would like to change their way of teaching. This could mean they don't think that the problem is their way of teaching or something wrong they do, but it is the pupils' behavior.

This graph talks for itself.. That 17% thinks that betrayed is too much, they prefer to consider students' lies as little excuses, so they can't feel betrayed but merely they were pulling their legs..
Surprisingly only one interviewed teacher said he' s not a liar, while the other ones judge themselves pretty good liars, explaining that sometimes it's necessary for diplomatic reasons.. which made us laugh.. but the most unexpected answer was: "lying nowadays is the driving force of life!!!"

It's foolish turning around it.. we students are chronic liars!!

teenagers judge themselves

Let's sum up
PEOPLE JUDGE THEMSELVES:

Our Presentation

On Thursday 20th September we gave a presentation of our project at our school, Eckersley Oxford. A special guest attended, Rev, Hugh Lee and he gave us his comments about our work at the end of the presentation. Also present was the owner of the school, John Eckersley, who began our presentation with a welcome speech.

Here is the programme of our presentation.

What teenagers think about lying, honesty and naivety

Answers

TEENAGERS

The first question left everybody perplexed.. our impression was that most of them were scared by answering, so they said impulsively: No, I don't. Ehm.. sometimes..
This guys ended up to be by far the worst liars.. In spite of this 49% confesses to be a liar.
Creditable..

Concluded that everybody lies, although someone kept on denying, we found out when they did lie. 42% said they lie just when it's necessary, for example to avoid hurting someone or to hide something they did wrong; while 29% explained they lie only to hide foolish thing or to have fun with friends. "It depends" is a very vague answer and so.. it's open to interpretation.

"How often?" has got a wide assortment of answers:
43% said -not so much or seldom-
42% said -often or very often- A boy even said.. Three times a week!! And we would like him to explain further this answer..
15% said simply -sometimes-

Parents are the most favourite teens' butt (JUST AFTER TEACHERS), someone answering to the question-Do you lie to your parents?- said -Of course!!-They lie about just everything: about school marks, where they do go, they hide relationships or bad friendship etc.. So teachers got to win the first prize, while teens do not use to lie to their friends, except of white lies.. Finally they confessed to prefer a truthful relationship with their own partner.

Let's pretend it to be true..

75% of the interviewees seem to have solid values and to believe in friendship, so they declare not to be able to injure their friend or, at least, they had the common sense not to say it in front of their friends..

Beside 25% do not believe in friendship and they say it wouldn't be worth to sacrifice themselves for an hypothetical friend.

It's quite clear that most of teens do not feel guilty over lies.. and actually is rather useless to cry over spilt milk or weep crocodile tears.. Should we interpret it as a wish to change or simply as a regret that disappear at the next day's dawn?...

Street interviews: just impression...

Introduction

Yesterday, 11th September, we started our "raid on the road", unaware of what was going to occur to us.. Hopefully we found the proper place to stay and to catch our prey.. It was devastating!! Almost ten people, obviously English, passed by without answering yes or no to my easy question -Would you like to answer a few questions? Just a few minutes! Please..- These were the worst cases.. When we were lucky they answered no at least or avoided us seeing the video-camera or listened to what the project consisted of.. and then said no..
After the eleventh attempt a whole family stopped, but they were revealed to be the hardest people to interview.. The family man made up his own questions and then answered them and didn't let me talk at all! His daughter interrupted me continuously as well and I had to fight to manage to say something..... Then we were much more lucky and we got to interview three young Chilean boys who took it very seriously. And finally a middle aged man stopped, he himself asking to be interviewed!

We might be satisfied if we forgot the beginning.. but it has been such an interesting experience and we're just looking forward to doing it again!!

Our interview with the vicar...

Friday 14 September we went to S. Michael Church and we met Reverend Hugh Lee, to discuss about conscience from the Church’s point of view. He was very wise, kind and willing to answer the questions. We chose to interview him because we think conscience is an important aspect of Christianity, and we wanted to compare the Christian understanding and the general public’s view of conscience.
These were our questions:

1. What does conscience mean for you?
2. How important is conscience in Christianity?
3. In your opinion, when do children start to have a conscience?
4. How do people who believe in God relate to conscience?
5. In your opinion, how do people who don’t believe in God relate to conscience?
6. Are there any stories of how the conscience is important in the bible?
7. Why don’t we always listen to our conscience? What can help us listen to our conscience?
8. How much does the conscience influence reason?
9. If a Christian told you he has troubles with his conscience, how would you advise him?
10. Where does the conscience come from?
11. In your opinion, what are the differences in meaning of conscience in all the religions?

These are his answers:
1. Conscience is feeling yourself, you wish you haven't done it, you know you've done something wrong. It's a very strong feeling that gets me worried.
2. It's pretty important, God has made us and so our conscience. It' s an emotion, it comes from God and was given to us to help our lives.
3. In some children it develops much more quickly, it' s influenced by the way which their parents look after them, the things they tell them, how they tell them "You mustn't do this".
4. We should listen to our conscience and respond to it. We need to be a little careful; our conscience isn't God itself, so we need to think, not just respond instinctively to our conscience, but actually think what's going on here, what' s happened and why did I do that.
5. There are a lot of people who behave very good lives, but for one reason or another they don't believe in God, and they would listen to their conscience like Christians do and respond in the same way. Many others say "I'm just wanna do what I like" and after a bit their conscience is suppressed.
6. There are both in old and new testament.
7. Praying and spending time talking to God can help us to understand what God says to us. So I think it's the best way to develop our conscience.
8. Our conscience is an emotion opposed to rational thought. This means that we are emotional beings and rational beings, and some people say you shouldn't do anything from the emotional point of view.
9. I would ask him what are is troubles and let him talk about it, but I would advice him that his conscience is important anda God maybe says something through that.
10. I'm sure it's God given like the rest of our emotions, but it is also something we develop or suppress. It develops from the parents criticise it a lot then we may have a conscience that in effect give us too much troubles. If they let us do anything we'll lose our conscience.
11. I don't know a lot about other religions but I think that it's similar. I think all the religions are about how to live good in different ways and part of that is responding to our spirit. Different religions would describe it in different ways. There are some religions who think that the aim of life is to become free of this world and free of our emotions so maybe they think they want to be free of their conscience.

Sending a fax to the owner of the "Plain Leather"....

Before our first "official" interview, we wrote a letter to Mr. Albert Ford, the owner of the "Plain eather" to ask him for his collaboration in our project work. We tried to explain to him our main goals and what we wanted to learn from his interview....here is the result...

Dear Mr. Albert Ford,
We are four Italian students working on a project related to Pinocchio's fairy tale.

Each group extrapolated a specific theme to face and the name of our own project contains the meaning itself and the goals of the interview:
LYING, HONESTY AND NAIVETY.

We are arranging some interviews with different categories of people, to find out the differences between their points of view on the above.

In your own case we would like to work out a shop owner's perception of "Lying, Honesty and Naivety" and how this affect your profession.

Anyway I ought state in advance we are going to respect your own privacy and you can exercise the right not to answer why you don't want to and if you consider the question inappropriate.

We are filming the interview for the purposes of analysing our results effectively.
We are very grateful for your assistance in our project.

If you have any further questions, please do noy hesitate to contact us.

Your sincerely

Interview to the vicar Hugh Lee

Here are the questions and the answers from the vicar. It was a very interesting meeting; his answers were useful for us because they were about regret seen from a religious piont of view as well as a more general moral one.

  • From the Christian point of view, what does repentance represent?
- Repentance, comes from the greek "metanoia",and means to change our lives.

  • What does Bible say about repentance and regret?
- The Bible says a lot of things, one of them, to be open to God's love,it is one of its main themes.

  • Why is repentance important in Chistianity?
-Because if we repent we are open and we enjoy life.

  • There are a number of passages in the Epistles and Revelation which present repentance as a condition of temporal salvation. What does it mean from your point of view?
- We must repent to be saved and to be open to God's love. For exemple, the criminal on the cross near Jesus repented and recognised God, so he went to Paradise.

  • What should a Christian do when he regrets something?
-I is very important to say sorry to people and to God, and repair what is possible to express our sorrow.

  • Do you think people are inclined to repent and do they repent truthfully?

- Depends on the person. But if it's difficult to say sorry,it probably means the sorrow is really true.

  • What do you think about destiny? Do you believe that things you regret could have been different or do you believe it was just destiny that it turned out as it did?
- I don't believe in destiny. God is love and love means freedom. There isn't destiny and we have the choise to love people or not to love them.

Now our interviews are really finished after a lot of days of hard work!!!

Martin's talk

An important interview for our project was the one to the academic Dr Martin Potter, who we met on Thursday in the students' room. We wanted to ask him many questions about Pinocchio and the main themes of this fairy tale, but, in his interesting introduction, he answered most of them before we asked them! So,while Egidio was recording,we had to think about other questions. He talked about differences and similarities between people and machines, quoting several fairy tales from different cultures.

The discussion became more interesting when Martin told us that many people would like to be machines to not know the difference between good and evil and so to have an easier life, but machines haven't feelings, so it wouldn't be a real life ( and we agree with him...).

This experience has been very relevant for our project because Martin gave us another possible interpretation of Pinocchio's tale linked to the other fairy tales from different centuries.

To Keble college...

Yesterday we went to Keble college, a typical Oxford college. With us there was also Martin Potter, an academic man who said to us that Keble college is one of the largest of the constituent colleges of the university of Oxford.
It was a beautiful day so we lay down on the grass of the quad, but only two minutes later a woman scolded us because it was forbidden!!!!! What a disgraceful impression we gave!! We visited the whole college, also the chapel where we saw a wonderful picture called “The light of the world”. We went also in the magnificent dining hall which was arranged ready for breakfast. All around the roof of the college there were the typical Gargoyles with their ugly faces. We had a lot of fun and we took many photos… what a wonderful day!

Mission interviews: Regret

Here we are! We have finally finished our interviews about regret! It was very difficult to find people who wanted to talk with us...but we reached our mission!!! We asked them few questions to know what people think, we interviewed several kinds of people of different age and in the end we discussed our topic with the vicar Hugh Lee of the Saint Michael's Church to know his religious point of view.

Here are our questions to the general public:

1. Have you ever done anything you regret?
2. Do you think everybody regrets something?
3. How do you feel when you regret something?
4. Do you believe in destiny?
· If you believe in it, do you have any regrets? 5. What is your biggest regret about?

Work
1.
What’s your job?
2. Do you like it or you would have had another one?
3. Have you ever lost any good opportunity? (Why?)
4. Have you ever had a job you didn’t like? (What kind of job?)

Family
1. Have you got a family?
· Do you think you gave more importance to your work than to your family?
· Do you regret it?

Other relationships
1.
Have you got many friends?
· Do you regret this?
· Have you ever done something you regret to your friends or relatives?

Here are their answers:

1. Everybody regrets something:
"Yes,of course!That is life!"

2.

3.

4.

  • Most people believe that destiny and regret are linked. We think that it's very difficult to answer to this question... So almost everybody hesitated to answer, but some of them think that God is the maker of the destiny and can forgive every mistake.

5.

Work

Almost everybody lost a good opportunity about work and somebody wold have done another job and regret it.

"I lost some good opportunities about my studies."
"When i was very young I did a part-time job that I didn't like."

Family

Only somebody regrets something about family but gives more importance to it than to the work.

"I argued with my parents a lot of times... but now all's well!!!"

Other relationships

All the interviewed people have a lot of friends even if they have some regrets about them though these aren't very big.

"I regret that I told lies to my friends and argued with them."

It was wery difficult to interview people in the street because it was the first time for us and not everybody really wanted to speak to us... From our research we found out that it's impossible not to have any regret because everybody does something wrong in their life and perhaps it's only if you don't have a conscience that you don't regret anything.

Interviews "on the road"...what's conscience?

Monday we had a very animated day: first of all, we wrote on our blog about our first interviews with eckersley students; then, after lunch, we went out to carry out interviews on the street.
At first, we went to "Clarendon Centre" . It was the first experience for us, so we were worried about it...

After many vain attempts, we found someone willing to give an interview... but, at the end of the interview, we realized that there was no tape in the videocamera!!We were disappointed, but it didn't matter because after we carried out three other interviews... with a tape in the camera!

Then, while we were interviewing a man, a security guard arrived and told us, with a threatening look: "SWITCH OFF THE CAMERA!!"
So we went out, very dejected, we lie in waiting on the street and finally we interviewed undisturbed 5 people... they were very kind and willing, so we are very satisfied of our work, because now we have a lot of material for our project!

These are our questions about conscience:

1. Have you heard of Pinocchio? And Jiminy Cricket?
2. Do you believe in conscience?
3. What does conscience mean for you?
4. How important is the conscience from 1 to 10 for you?
5. Do you think it makes you happy to follow your conscience?
6. Do you think it makes you happy not to follow your conscience?
7. Do you think the conscience develops from yourself or from your upbringing?
8. In your opinion, when do you think children start to have a conscience?
9. Imagine that…
- One of your friends stole something from a shop, and you know it… (Teenagers)
- Your son stole a car, and you know it… (Adults)
What would you do?

These are the results of our research:

It was a nice experience and our worries are gone, so we are ready to do it again!

About regret...why we chose this as our topic for research

Regret is one of the most important of human qualities that makes people better than they are.
In fact it helps people to understand their mistakes and not to make them again. In Pinocchio this theme is very important and comes up again and again during the story because Pinocchio repetedly makes mistakes and regrets it.
We want to find out if regret influences people' s future actions. To help us to do this, we are going to interview people on the street and organise 'specific' interviews. We hope that we can learn a lot by listening to different peoples' points of view.

Why we chose conscience...

One of the most relevant themes of Pinocchio story is conscience, represented by the character of Jiminy Cricket. By taking a look at the story everybody could understand that finally the protagonist of our story will achieve his dream only by listening to his conscience.

So, we chose this topic because it is very interesting to compare today's society with an old fairytale that reflects values which are dying out.

We think it will be interesting to interview different kinds of people on this subject.. What do teenagers think about conscience? And old people? Is it important for them? We also want to interview a priest to find out what the Church thinks about this argument..

We hope to learn something new from this experience..

Answers

The first question left everybody perplexed..our impression was that most of them were scared by answering, so they said impulsively: No, I don't.Ehm..sometimes..
This guys ended up to be by far the worst liars..
Inspite of this 49% confesses to be a liar.

43% said -not so much or seldom-
42% said -often or very often- A boy even said..Three times a week!!And we would like him to explain further this answer..

So teachers got to win the first prize, while teens do not use to lie to their friends, except of white lies..Finally they confessed to prefer a truthfull relationship with their own partner.

Let's pretend it to be true..

75% of the interviewees seem to have solid values and to believe in friendship, so they declare not to be able to injure their friend or, at least, they had the common sense not to say it in front of their friends..

Beside 25% do not believe in friendship and they say it wouldn't be worth to sacrifice themselves for an hypotetical friend.

It's quite clear that most of teens do not feel guilty over lies.. and actually is rather useless to cry over spilt milk or weep crocodile tears..Should we interpret it as a wish to change or simply as a regret that disappear at the next day's dawn?...
Let's sum up

PEOPLE JUDGE THEMSELVES:

TEACHERS
Talking about Honesty just a little part of teacher state to be honest to their pupils, because it's a part of their personality..But almost 80% declare to be not able to be completely honest because of several causes: someone is afraid to be disappointed by others' behaviour, one said that
encourages his pupils pretending to be satisfied with their works also when he's not.

This could mean they don't think that the problem is their way of teaching or something wrong they do,but it is the pupils' behaviour.

This graph talks for itself..That 17% thinks that betrayed is too much, they prefer to consider students' lies as little excuses, so they can't feel betrayed but merely they were pulling their legs..

Senior citizens

It is very important to explain the reason why we did chose this specific category and it is that we wanted to work out an outcoming of their lives.

We are sorry we could't interview enough people belonging to this category, to make any graph or statistic. Becouse of this we are obliged to report merely the answers of the interview.

Liar=no Honest=yes Naive=no

No (But it's human!) May be you don't know me..

Yes, I've hidden many things to my parents, I must confess..
I prefer much more the way I'm now rather than before, because when one lies always runs the risk of being found out..

First of all is important to be honest towards ourselves because otherway you cannot be honest toward other people.Lies aren't to be said

I think I've never done anything dishonest..well...speeding by car..

Not at all.Dishonest people go to jail.

Of course they're not the same! Look at map on the dictionary!

we're just looking forward to doing it again!!
